DATA DESCRIPTION:
Information for
SOILS data layer was derived from Private Forest Land Grading system (PFLG) and
subsequent soil Surveys. PFLG was a five-year mapping program completed in 1980
for the purpose of forest land taxation. It was funded by the Washington State
Department of Revenue in cooperation with the Department of Natural Resources,
Soil Conservation Service (SCS), USDA Forest Service and Washington State
University.
State
and private lands which have the potential of supporting commercial forest
stands were surveyed. Some Indian tribal and federal lands were surveyed.
Because this was a cooperative soil survey project, agricultural and
non-commercial forestlands were also included within some survey areas.
After
the Department of Natural Resources originally developed its geographic
information system, digitized soils delineations and a few soil attributes were
transferred to the system. Remaining PFLG soil attributes were added at a later
time and are now available through associated lookup tables. SCS soils data on
agricultural lands also have subsequently been added to this data layer.
Approximately 1,100
townships wholly or partially digitized soils data (2,101 townships would
provide complete coverage of the state of Washington).
SOILS
data are currently stored in the Polygon Attribute Table (.PAT) and INFO
expansion files.

describes a major commercial tree species that could potentially grow on a
specific soil type as identified in the Private Forest Land Grading program
(PFLG). Non-tree codes are also included to map non-soil ground cover, e.g.
water, gravel pits.

CODE TABLE OR VALUE RANGE: PFLG.OPRL.CD.CODE
DESCRIPTION:
This soil classification--based
on soil and geomorphic characteristics--describes the impact
of forest operations on a specific site. It was collected for the
Private Forest Land Grading soils program. There are five codes:
0 - NOT RATED.
1 - FAVORABLE. Stable soils sloping less than 30%.
Forest operations roading, logging,
etc.) do not significantly impact soil
productivity or erosion, and are
carried out with minimal limitations.
2 - AVERAGE. Includes stable soils sloping less
than 30%, but on which significant
erosion, compaction or displacement might occur as a
result of forest operations.
3 - DIFFICULT. This is characterized by one of
the following:
a) stable soils sloping 30 - 65%,
b) soils sloping 0 - 65% and
showing evidence that rapid mass movement
might occur as a direct result of forest operations.
4 - EXTREME. All soils sloping more than 65%.

CODE TABLE OR VALUE RANGE: 0-200
DESCRIPTION:
Site
index data collected for the Private Forest Land Grading soils program (PFLG).
It is a designation of the quality of a forest site based on the height of the
tallest trees (dominant and co-dominant trees) in a stand at an arbitrarily
chosen age. Usually the age chosen is 50 or 100 years. For example, if the
average height attained by the tallest trees in a fully stocked stand at the
age of 50 years is 75 feet the site index is 75 feet. Westside site conditions
are estimated by using an index age of 50 years, while eastside site conditions
are estimated by using an index age of 100 years.

program (PFLG). This is an east-side variable that measures the potential of a
soil type to support increasingly dense stands of timber as measured by using
the percentage of normal basal area.

DESCRIPTION:
Soil
survey areas defined by the Private Forest Land Grading Program (PFLG) and
subsequent surveys. Most soil survey areas are generally based on county
location. A few cross county boundaries or cover smaller areas within counties.
Code numbers above 55 represent soil survey areas established by non-PFLG soil
survey programs. For example, code 56 represent soils surveyed by the Soil
Conservation Service (SCS) in the west portion of Whatcom county.

DESCRIPTION:
This is
a unique sequence number which is automatically generated by the ARC/INFO software.
This internal number is used by the ARC/INFO software as a direct access record
number for the feature. Therefore the number should not be changed in any way
by the user. It is also used to describe topological relationships between
coverage features.

DESCRIPTION:
This
is a number assigned to each feature by the user. It need not be
unique and will be maintained by the system as the coverage is processed.
It can be used to represent an attribute for the feature or to relate
additional attribute information to the feature.
